Top Ten Questions Answered

1. When?
The process normally takes about 9-12 months, but since we are wanting to raise and save the money it is going to cost, we are anticipating more like 12-18 months.

2. How much does it cost?
About $30,000. Yeah, yikes! There are small payments as we go along: fingerprinting, home study, etc. The largest chunk of money is the country fee and it is about $17,000 due when we receive our referral.

3. Boy or Girl?
We don't get to specify and we don't care. There are about 8 boys to every 2 girls available from South Korea, so we are anticipating a boy.

4. Age?
The child will be older than 5 months but younger than a year. For the first five months they are only available for domestic adoptions in Korea and then they are opened to international adoption.

5. Where are we in the process?
We have filled our prelim application and have been accepted into the program and told we can fill out a formal application but before we can do our homestudy we will have to show access to the $30,000. So grow little money tree, grow!

6. Are we given a child or do we select a child from a group?
We will be given a referral, which is information on a specific child. The packet will include picture(s) and background on the child and his/her birth parents. We will have the option of accepting the referral or turn it down. If we turn down the referral, we will wait for a second referral.

7. Are the children in orphanages?
No, the children are in homes with foster parents for the most part.

8. Do we have a name picked out?
Yes, look for a post on just that soon.

9. Will you travel to South Korea to get your child?
Hopefully, yes. South Korea is one program that will allow your child to be escorted to the United States. We would like to be able to travel to South Korea, experience the culture, see where our baby was born and raised and love on the people who loved our baby first.

10. How can I help?
First off, please pray for us. Secondly, we'd love your help and support to raise the needed $30,000. We will be having some fundraisers in the next couple of months and would love your participation. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let us know- we are open to anything that will raise us the much needed $$$! (including selling kidneys on the black market....)

If you have any other questions that weren't answered, feel free to ask.

  1. Wow, that's a lot of money! I am already enjoying following along and can't wait to see the end result. A consideration for a future post (maybe you have already planned this), Why South Korea? Michael has a cousin that adopted two kids from China and you always hear about celebs getting kids from all over the world, so how did you two decide on South Korea?
