The South Korean flag, the Taegeuk has three main parts: the white background, the Yin and Yang in the center, and the 4 trigrams around the outside.
The white background symbolizes the purity of the Korean people.
The Yin and Yang in the center represent balance. The Yin represented in blue represents the negative aspect of the universe. The balance of the Yang in red is the positive aspect of the universe. The Yin and Yang show total balance and continual movement within infinity merging as one.
The idea is that the universe is a perfect balance of many things: of light and dark, good and bad, heaven and earth, male and female. The balance is fluid. So always changing and moving. So that's why the line between the colors is not straight.
The four trigrams, starting in the upper left hand corner and moving clockwise are Heaven, Water, Earth, and Fire. Heaven and Earth are located across from each other, as are Water and Fire, again to balance each other.
