Let's Learn about Korea: National Flower

The weather last weekend was 70, can you say SPRING FEVER?

So today we will be learning about the National Flower of South Korea.

The national flower of South Korea is the Hibiscus syriacus, more commonly known in the United States as Rose of Sharon.

The flower appears in national emblem, and Korea is compared poetically to the flower in the National Athem of South Korea. The flower's name in Korean is mugunghwa ( 무궁화). The flower's symbolic significance stems from the Korean word mugung, meaning immortality.

It is a flowering shrub that is native to much of Asia. It is vase-shaped, reaching 2-4 m in height. It is widely planted in areas with hot summers for its very attractive white, pink, red, lavender, or purple flowers. Individual flowers are short lived, lasting only a day.

Fun fact, the flowers are edible.

Looks like we will be planting a Rose of Sharon Hibiscus at our house this spring!
